Get walking this winter.
As the calendar flips to a new year, there’s no better time to embrace the crisp January air and embark on a refreshing stroll through the beautiful grounds of Westport House.
With its unique blend of history, nature, and enchantment, here’s five things to keep an eye out for during your walk of the grounds at Westport House:
1. The Lake
Starting your walk of the grounds via Hotel Westport?
One of the first things you’ll encounter is the serene, manmade lake.
At one point in time, the waves of the Atlantic Ocean would gently lap against the very doors of Westport House itself. To ingeniously manage this natural force, the picturesque lake was crafted, diverting the water and transforming the landscape.
The glimmer of winter sun reflecting off the lake during a January walk of the grounds is truly a beautiful sight.
2. Fairy Houses
As you continue your walk through the grounds, you may spot some charming miniature houses and doors whimsically gracing our trees and scenery.
These enchanting habitats are fairy houses where all sorts of magical winged things live and frolic!
In Irish folklore, fairies, are mystical beings deeply woven into the fabric of Celtic mythology thought to possess magical powers and a profound connection to nature.
3. Grace O’Malley Statue
Pause and pay homage to the legendary Grace O’Malley, the fearless pirate queen whose spirit resonates through Westport House.
The bronze Grace O’Malley statue that stands proudly on the walkway towards the House is a great tribute to one of our leading female figures on the Estate.
The statue stands tall, capturing the essence of her strength and determination.
4. The Toastie Food Truck
